Most people set their water heater to 120°F. That way, the water is still hot when it reaches the furthest parts of their plumbing system, but it also is not so hot that it is likely to cause burns.
It’s possible for water heaters to explode, but it’s very, very rare. This can happen with both gas and electric heaters and is more likely when the heater is not well maintained. If you’re worried about this, we can test your water heater and let you know your risk.
Turn on the circuit breaker for the water heater, and/or the gas line that feeds it. Make sure there is a flow of water into the heater and that the pilot light is working. There may be a switch you need to turn or a button you need to press to turn on the heater, depending on the make and model of your unit.
There is no single best type of hot water heater. The one that’s right for you depends on the way your system is set up, your usage patterns, and more. Our team can help you find the best water heater for your specific needs.
In Houston’s climate, traditional tank water heaters typically last 8-12 years with proper maintenance, while tankless systems can last 15-20 years. Hard water conditions in certain Houston areas can reduce lifespan by causing sediment buildup. Regular maintenance from Luke’s Plumbing & Air Conditioning, including annual flushing and anode rod inspection, can extend your water heater’s life by several years. We recommend considering replacement if your unit is nearing these age ranges, especially if you’re experiencing performance issues.
For traditional tank water heaters, a family of 1-2 people typically needs a 30-40 gallon unit, 2-3 people need 40-50 gallons, and 3-5 people need 50-80 gallons. Larger Houston households may require multiple units or a high-capacity model. For tankless systems, sizing depends on flow rate requirements—how many fixtures you need to use simultaneously. Luke’s Plumbing & Air Conditioning can analyze your home’s specific hot water demands and recommend the optimal size and type for your family’s needs and budget.
Don’t suffer through another cold shower or sink full of dishes waiting for hot water. Our Houston water heater experts will diagnose your issue and implement effective solutions right away. Call Luke’s Plumbing & Air Conditioning now for prompt service that restores comfort to your daily routine.
